Millions of red pine trees have been planted in the past 100 years starting in the 1920's and continuing today. Planting projects after both world wars provided employment for returning veterans while reclaiming abandoned agricultural land. The 1980's saw another surge in planting smaller abandoned agricultural areas. Much of this land originally in pine oak associations in sandy deep soil. These soils are not typically nutrient rich and are depleted easily.
