Silviculture is described as the art and science of producing and tending a forest. More importantly the theory and practice of controlling forest establishment, composition, growth and quality of forests to achieve the objectives of forest management (2). There are three main silvicultural systems used in Ontario.
Selection; Maintain a high canopy forest with partial removals periodically. Shelterwood; Frequently used in conifer management as well as mid tolerant hardwoods like yellow birch, oak and basswood. Clear cut; Infrequent in use, specifically for poplar, white birch and other shade intolerant species. |
